Mothers and Daughters

To my daughters Hannah and Olivia
This is the story of “The Ring” created to commemorate love and loss spanning four generations of women in our family.
After my grandmother died in 2009, I inherited two engagement rings. The first was a pretty ruby ring with diamonds set each side given to my great grandmother Ester (Ettie) Brightwell by her husband Alfred Ware. He owned the Butchers shop in Bridge Street, Eltham. They were married a happy 40 years until Alfred’s sudden death in 1953. The second, a three stone diamond ring, belonged to Alfred and Ettie’s daughter, Gwendoline, my grandmother. She married an Eltham dairy farmer, James (Wallace) Boddie. Sadly, the marriage ended in divorce, however Gran wore both rings until she passed away in New Plymouth, aged 94.
I added a further ring to this collection in order to create the heirloom. This was my 18 carat wedding band from my marriage to Hannah’s father, Scott. I wished to include this to show that even if love is lost, beautiful things may be created. The diamonds from that ring have been used on the shoulders of The Ring.
Gwen’s daughter, my mother, Jean Cave did not have a ring to contribute, and this too is significant to the story. Despite a lifetime of diabetes mellitus, Nan at 79, is still with us and has been happily married to Granddad for 54 years! However, she delighted in her contribution of paying for the remodeling of the rings. The flower design is perfect, and a true reflection of an inter generational passion for gardening and of Nan’s love of floral art.
The Ring is a precious piece of family history. I treasure the stories it tells, the women it celebrates, and the memories it holds.
Love Mum xx
